File-open-project Europe

Giorgi Tabatadze (Georgië, 1980)

File-open-project Europeis a project based on 7-8 images, retrieved by a simple Google search, of Anders Breivik (Norwegian gunman/bomber). Using Photoshop selection tools, these images are stripped only to leave selected shapes. By employing Photoshop the possibility to appear and disappear, to select or deselect, to do or undo, etc. is emphasized. Thus, the process of becoming – in this case becoming ‘new Europe’ – is underscored.

The file-open-project Europe is a reaction on current socio-political developments in Europe. Rising migration, economical challenges, etc. are responded to by rising extremism and right-wing ideology. This ideological shift can now be observed in places – The Netherlands among them – one wouldn’t expect but a few years ago.

The shape of Anders Breivik has become one of the signifiers on the current map of Europe. Creatively responding to the developments, De Kijkkasten will be updated with new images over the course of the exhibition.
